Programme Breakdown
Young people are increasingly aware of the challenges posed by the climate crisis, as well as the potential for sustainable development that comes with finding solutions to climate change. However, opportunities to explore real-world climate issues and contribute to meaningful scientific research are somewhat limited. Providing opportunities for young people to participate in climate research can help bridge the gap between knowledge and action.
The Irish Weather Rescue Project aims to do just that. This project seeks to engage young citizen scientists in a project to digitise millions of historical rainfall observations taken across Ireland during the late 19th to mid-20th Century.
Participants will be making a significant contribution to science by providing a more detailed picture of how rainfall patterns have changed over longer timescales, as well as providing more context around recent changes in rainfall variability due to human-caused climate change. An online web-based data rescue platform has been developed where participants can access images of the weather records and templates to transcribe the data. Detailed instructions, supports and an online video tutorial are provided along with a discussion forum where volunteers can interact with the project team. If you choose this project for your Gaisce journey, the first hour will be an introduction to the project by Met Éireann staff. Ideally this will take place in person but may be held virtually.
