More on Lorcan’s Gaisce Gold Journey

Community Work

Lorcan was recently honoured at the Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards for the fantastic volunteering activities he is involved in with Cycle Against Suicide and Webwise. As a Student Leader with Cycle Against Suicide, he learned that two thirds of Irish school students knew someone who had self-harmed because of online bullying. As he had experienced online bullying himself, he wanted to take action to combat it and he got involved with Webwise to focus on internet safety by sharing ideas with schools, creating resources, taking part in panel discussions and debates and he also became a safer internet trainer.

Going for Gold

For his Gaisce Gold award, Lorcan is transcribing school records in a Duchas project, learning to play the guitar and he is also learning how to scuba dive and snorkel as he plans to do a search and recovery course after he finishes his Leaving Cert.

Leadership and Team Building

Last summer, he took part in the Albert Schweizter Leadership for Life Foundation and worked with other young people from Israel, Palestine and Europe to explore each other’s cultures and participate in leadership and team-building activities.

Future Adventures: Kerry or Spain?

This summer he has been invited back as a junior leader/facilitator. His Adventure Journey will probably be a section of the Camino or the Kerry/Dingle Way.

Like Mother Like Son

Lorcan will not be the first person in his family to receive a Gold award as he is following in the footsteps of his mother who has also achieved her own Gold award and received it from then president Mary Robinson.
