Explorations
The President's Award is open to all young people. And we strongly
encourage the participation of young people with physical and learning
disabilities. An expedition can by its very nature be an obstacle
for a person with a disability, and so the participant can opt for
an exploration instead. While we encourage participants to do an
expedition, the choice is up to the participant themselves.
An exploration involves less journeying than the expedition with
a greater proportion of the time involved being spent on approved
activities. These activities can be research, investigations or
other specific activities, ideally undertaken in the context of
an expedition. The typical types of exploration for the Bronze and
Silver Awards would be the exploration or study of wildlife in a
particular area, old pilgrimage routes, churches, old buildings,
folklore etc.
An exploration at Gold level would need to be of a higher level
with the possibility of it taking place in a foreign country and
a significant amount of preparation done in advance. More and more
young people are choosing to spend some time abroad doing volunteer
work and there are many organisations that exist to promote this
type of activity. While the period of time spent volunteering can
vary and as such may not be long enough to fulfil the Community
Section of the Award, it would however provide an ideal opportunity
to undertake an exploration.
